Eyebrow Microblading: Aftercare Dos and Don’ts
They say a woman’s best accessory is a pair of naturally fluffy brows.
Contrary to what some think, eyebrows need a lot of attention. One way to keep your brows looking their best is through microblading. Using specialized tools, the eyebrows are shaped by mimicking the effect of natural hair. It involves making tiny cuts in the skin where a pigment is inserted to create the effect of fuller eyebrows.
Proper aftercare is vital following an eyebrow microblading procedure. In this article, we share important aftercare tips to help you get the best possible results.
Types of Microblading Aftercare
When it comes to microblading aftercare, your aesthetician may recommend dry or wet healing.
Wet healing includes gently washing the brows with sterile water and blot-drying them with a clean cloth. You may be advised to apply aftercare ointment to help speed up skin regeneration and protect against contamination.
Dry healing comes in two forms. One is washing the brows the same way as in the wet-healing method minus the ointment application. The second is a bit extreme and not always recommended because it may lead to infections and complications. Instead of washing and ointment application, the brows are left to heal naturally by avoiding contact with water.
The Dos and Don’ts of Aftercare
Regardless of which aftercare method you choose, there are some general dos and don’ts that you need to follow to the dot:
Do:
- Keep them dry as much as possible to speed up the healing
- Avoid the eyebrow area when washing your face
- Prevent irritation by sleeping on your back
Don’t:
- Touch the eyebrows with your hands for at least 24 hours
- Apply makeup or use cosmetic products on the eyebrows
- Engage in activities that will cause sweating
- Expose the eyebrows to direct sunlight for extended periods
- Tan, enter a sauna, or swim
- Rub, itch, or pick the eyebrow area
- Let your hair rub or touch the eyebrows
- Get them wet
More Aftercare Tips
Microblading involves skin cuts and pigment insertion, so you must allow your brows to heal properly. Patience and good hygiene are essential to effective healing.
Every person’s skin may react differently, which is why it is important to understand that you may experience some ups and downs. There will also be visible color changes during the healing process, but they shouldn’t be cause for alarm.
Below are more general aftercare tips:
Keeping the Eyebrows Clean
Following the eyebrow microblading procedure, the brows may appear too bold or have intense redness and be sensitive and swollen. That’s why you should keep the area dry for the first few hours after the treatment.
In the first week after the procedure, the brows may become darker, with possible flaking. You will probably get the urge to wash and rub the area, but be patient. Keep the surrounding area clean, but don’t touch the brows. Do not try to remove or pick the scabs that appear.
You can clean the area with water and antibacterial soap during the first week. Use cotton pads to remove the lymph fluid coming from the wound.
Use of Ointment
During the recovery period, the aesthetician will recommend ointments for your brows. They should help retain skin moisture while forming a protective barrier over the eyebrows. The ointment helps the brows create a protective layer and heal faster.
Washing Your Face
Wait for your aesthetician to give you the green light to return to your regular hygiene habits. Until then, you will need to alter your face-washing routine and adjust it to the current situation.
Instead of splashing your face with water as you usually do, use a washcloth, mild soap, and warm water. Rub some of the soap on the wet washcloth, squeeze out the excess water, and carefully wash the face while avoiding the eyebrow area. Once cleaned, dry the skin, taking care to avoid the brows.
Washing Eyebrows After Microblading
When the scabs are done peeling, and the brows have healed naturally, it is time to bathe the eyebrows. It usually takes 12 to 14 days after the procedure before you can return to your daily skincare routine.
Be sure to consult your aesthetician before returning to your regular routine. The brows will usually be safe from water at this point, so wash your whole face and enjoy the new you!
Taking a Shower
When aestheticians say no water after microblading, they simply mean avoiding the regular showering and facial wash routines. Because microbladed eyebrows must be protected from moisture, it’s best to avoid exposure to water for three to four days following the treatment.
Avoid steamy showers and keep them short so your face can remain dry. One way is to use shower shields or visors developed for this purpose exactly.
What to Put on Eyebrows After Microblading
Your aesthetician will recommend the necessary aftercare products. These ointments are usually panthenol-based or glycerin-based.
Coconut oil, virgin olive oil, avocado oil, and products containing honey, propolis, shea butter, and beeswax are also used. Ointments with honey and propolis are considered good antibacterial products.
And remember, the ointment should not be applied in thick layers! Using a Q-tip, apply a thin layer of the ointment on the brow.
