Skin Rejuvenation Trends for 2019

Last year, multiple trends emerged and redefined the future of skincare. 2018 brought us bakuchiol, an anti-inflammatory and natural alternative to retinol, sheet masks, collagen supplements, and vampire facials. This year, skincare is expected to be bigger, better and tech-ier than ever as brands come up with more personalized products for skin rejuvenation.

1. Polyhydroxy Acids (PHAs)

Those, particularly into skincare, are familiar with alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) for exfoliation. There is, however, a third one that is making itself known in the industry. Polyhydroxy acids or PHAs are second-generation AHAs that work by exfoliating dead skin cells on the surface to achieve a more even skin tone and texture. They differ from AHAs and BHAs because they work exclusively on the surface without penetrating the deeper delicate levels. As a result, there is less irritation and the skin does not become susceptible to UV rays.

Because of their larger molecular size and surface-level penetration, PHAs are ideal for almost all skin types, especially those that are sensitive to AHA- or BHA-based products. They attract water and reduce the loss of moisture, also making them an attractive option for those with dry skin.

2. Microneedle Eye Patches

These eye masks smooth out wrinkles and brighten up bags without the need for invasive procedures. They use self-dissolving micro cones to enhance the penetration of hyaluronic acid, often alongside other skincare ingredients. Hyaluronic acid is effective for instant hydration but since it is a large molecule, it often isn’t readily taken up by the skin. Since microneedling eye patches are designed to be worn overnight, the skin is able to absorb the hyaluronic acid and active compounds while avoiding external water loss.

3. Moringa

Every part of moringa olifeira is a storehouse of vitamins and nutrients used in skincare and traditional medicine. This natural ingredient is rich in vitamin A, which is one of the most potent vitamins out there for near-perfect skin. It is packed with vitamin E, which is both an antioxidant and moisture magnet that combat dry, flaky skin and pollution. The vitamin C in this essential oil boosts collagen and reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin.

Moringa is similar to the oil the skin produces naturally so when applied topically, skin cells are able to renew themselves quickly, limiting pigmentation, breakouts, and blemishes. It absorbs deep into the skin, sealing in hydration needed to benefit dry and sensitive skin. While most benefits are based on traditional use and small laboratory studies, brands continue to use of moringa oil in their topical products.
