What to Do When You’re Turned Down for Rhinoplasty
Many people planning to get rhinoplasty may not know that there is a chance that their plastic surgeon could turn them down. It is important to know that when your surgeon says “no” to you, it’s always for a good reason.
Why Are Some People Turned Down for Rhinoplasty?
Plastic surgeons will always sit down and ask questions about why you want the surgery in the first place, your medical history, and your expected outcome. Your answers will determine if it is in your best interest to go through with the surgery or not.
1. You Might Have Unrealistic Expectations
Reputable plastic surgeons, while they want you to achieve your goals, are also thinking about your safety. If what you want to achieve seems risky or too extreme then plastic surgeons are likely to decline your request.
2. You Might Have Underlying Health Issues
Before proceeding with rhinoplasty, and most types of cosmetic surgery, your plastic surgeon will review your medical history. Certain illnesses and conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, and lifestyle habits like smoking and recreational drug use, may result in complications caused by anesthesia and the surgical process.
3. Your Motivations for Doing the Surgery Could Hurt You
Reputable cosmetic surgeons care about not only your physical health but also your mental health and overall wellbeing. We want to make sure that you wish to undergo surgery of your own volition. If we suspect that you’re being pressured into getting rhinoplasty by family, friends, or a partner, or if you think that getting a nose job will help you land a job, the answer will almost always be no.
A percentage of patients that have been turned down for cosmetic surgery have a condition called body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), which is identified as an extreme obsession with a perceived physical flaw, usually to the point that it is detrimental to their daily life.
BDD patients may think that going through with cosmetic surgery will make them feel better about themselves, but BDD is a psychological condition that cannot be treated with cosmetic surgery. Experienced plastic surgeons can recognize signs of BDD and will refer a patient to seek professional assistance from a psychologist.
What to Do When a Plastic Surgeon Turns You Down?
Let’s say you truly disagree with a particular surgeon’s decision, you can get a second opinion from a different surgeon. However, while you may be able to find another provider who is willing to offer rhinoplasty, we do not recommend scouting for surgeons just to find one that will agree to your wishes.
If you have been turned down, take the time to reflect on your surgeon’s advice. Remember that they are thinking about your health and have your best interests at heart. Additionally, “no” does not always mean “never,” especially if you have been turned down for medical reasons. You can always come back once your health improves.
