The first cause of the dimpled, lumpy appearance to the skin we all know as cellulite comes from fibrous bands of connecting tissue beneath the dermis (called septae) that create dimples and valleys in the surface texture of the skin. Another cause of cellulite is excess subcutaneous fat in the same region. Excess fat can create bulging areas between the fibrous bands and make the lumps and dimples on the surface of the skin all the more apparent. Lastly, uneven dermis atop the fat layer contributes to the appearance of dimples and bumps associated with cellulite.

Through the use of a three-mode Sciton laser, each of the three underlying causes of cellulite is addressed separately. During the CelluSmooth process the proprietary Sciton laser system severs the fibrous septae bands below the surface of the skin to lessen the appearance of dimples. Then, the laser mode is switched to melt away the tiny pockets of fat that cause lumps and bulges on the surface of the skin. Finally, the laser is switched to a third mode to deliver heat to the underside of the dermis, coagulating proteins in the tissue and stimulating the body’s natural healing process to tighten and smooth the dermis.
