Oral Therapies
Vargas Hair Institute offer a variety of oral therapies that can be used as standalone treatment to combat and prevent hair loss. They can also be used in combination with other treatments for a highly effective treatment plan.
Propecia (Men)
Propecia or Finasteride is a prescription for men to help balding in the back of the scalp. Propecia prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the body. DHT in the scalp causes individual hairs to become thinner and shorter, which is known as follicular miniaturization. The prevention of the conversion results in DHT levels in the scalp to drop off and the hair stops thinning. In many cases the hair follicles will enlarge to allow thicker hairs to grow in.
Patients who take this medication shouldn’t expect to see results until three to four months after consistently taking daily doses. Results continue to improve over one year. The medication must be continued indefinitely to prevent hair loss from reoccurring. Propecia is best when utilized in combination with other treatments or as a pre-treatment to a procedure.
